Keeping an eye on your systems performance and monitoring its stats can be very useful.
It can help to pinpoint problems in software and to warn you of impending trouble.
iStat Menus provides system information in the menu bar at the top of the screen. You can specify what information you want to appear on the bar such as the temperature of specific devices and a click on the bar will drop down a list of all the similar information available. For example, clicking on the CPU temperature will drop down a list of all the other temperature readings available from the machine.
iStat Pro is a similar concept, iStat pro is a highly configurable widget that lets you monitor every aspect of your Mac, including CPU, memory, disks, network, battery, temperatures, fans, load & uptime and processes.

Adium

Adium is a multi-protocol IM client that I use all the time on my Mac.
Not only does it support a huge variety of protocols, it’s also feature packed. It supports the Growl notification system which helps to keep you informed when your using another app, and also has plenty of customisable themes.
It is also incredibly well coded, making it fast and very low on memory usage.
